It took five decades, but the Democratic Party has finally changed its stance on nuclear energy. In its recently released party platform, the Democrats say they favor a “technology-neutral” approach that includes “all zero-carbon technologies, including hydroelectric power, geothermal, existing and advanced nuclear, and carbon capture and storage.”

That statement marks the first time since 1972 that the Democratic Party has said anything positive in its platform about nuclear energy. The change in policy is good — and long overdue — news for the American nuclear-energy sector and for everyone concerned about climate change. The Democrats’ new position  means that for the first time since Richard Nixon was in the White House, both the Republican and Democratic parties are officially on record in support of nuclear energy. That’s the good news.

Why renewables aren’t to blame for California’s blackouts

The troubling situation last week was not because of a fundamental problem with renewable energy. With appropriate planning, California can continue to expand its use of renewables and decrease its carbon emissions, the root cause of the heat wave that triggered the blackouts in the first place.

(...) California’s last nuclear plant at Diablo Canyon, which generates nine percent of the state’s electricity today, is set to close in 2025.

(...)

Solar and wind power provide roughly 20 percent of the state’s electricity needs, but only when the sun is shining or the wind blowing. The biggest demand for electricity generally comes in the late afternoon—right when the daily contribution from solar is dropping. That mismatch in supply and demand is a big but predictable challenge for power managers: They know that every day, they’ll have to fill that gap with another power source.

“It is fairly well known that the sun sets in the evening,” (...) “We can predict the exact time it will set many years in advance."

The heat wave also ushered in relatively still air, so wind resources were lower than managers would have liked.

During the recent blackouts, some of these usually reliable sources were unexpectedly unavailable, for reasons that are still not fully clear.

“Any book worth banning is a book worth reading.”

“Any book worth banning is a book worth reading.”

E a gondolatkísérleted több sebből is vérzik.

Nahát, milyen érdekes véletlenek vannak...

A nuclear energy venture founded by Bill Gates said Thursday it hopes to build small advanced nuclear power stations that can store electricity to supplement grids increasingly supplied by intermittent sources like solar and wind power.

The effort is part of the billionaire philanthropist’s push to help fight climate change, and is targeted at helping utilities slash their emissions of planet-warming gases without undermining grid reliability.

(...)

Gates had initially hoped to build an experimental nuclear plant near Beijing with state-owned China National Nuclear Corp. But last year, TerraPower was forced to seek new partners after the Trump administration restricted nuclear deals with China.
