Raspberry Pi has better hardware and Emulates the Software of old IBM Mainframe and DEC VAX Cluster

Design Spark - a Raspberry Pi ($39) can be used to emulate a mainframe which would have filled a large computer room, and to run the same software which it would have run. Of course, the only reason you would do this is for fun, learning or perhaps as part of computer conservation efforts, e.g. in providing continued access to old computer software and/or data. A modern mainframe would massively outperform a Raspberry Pi and offer many benefits beyond simple processing power.

Having configured a mainframe on a Raspberry Pi, it was time to try out a Raspberry Pi on a mainframe! The image below shows the Pi sat on top (centre) of the CPU from an IBM 4381.

IBM 4381
* 2-2.7 MIPS CPU
* Optional maths co-processor
* 4-32MB RAM
* Up to 4x I/O channels running at 3MB/second

Pocked-sized Raspberry Pi, which manages to pack:

* 965 MIPS CPU
* FPU + 24GFLOP GPU
* 256MB RAM
* 60MB/second I/O (USB2)

Emulation is possible using open source software called Hercules. Run this under Debian Linux on a Raspberry Pi.

huhh (kicsit emlékeztet arra, hogy egyes bankokban valami VAX/VMS-en futó kikerülhetetlen szoftvert úgy tartottak életben, hogy volt valami svájci cég által gyártott VAX emulátor, ami NT4-en futott; aztán amikor már nem nagyon lehetett NT4-gyel kompatibilis hardvert találni, akkor az egész alá alátoltak valami modern vasat, amire VMware ESX-et raktak, és egy VM-ben futott az az enti.)

Ha már az emulálásról van szó, akkor nem értem miért hasonlít össze a cikk egy 100 éves vasat egy mostani SoC rendszerrel, nem pedig az RPi emulációs képességeivel. Egy 4 magos Xeon gépen max 200 MIPS környékére lehet kihajtani a hercules emulátort bizonyos körülmények közt, valós életben max. 40-50 MIPS-et lehet elérni. Ami persze nem rossz, de így nagyon félre érthető ez a 965 MIPS-es érték. Szerintem az RPi 1-2 MIPS-en lenne képes pörgetni egy zOS/zLinux-ot.

De ha egy mainframebe rúgok bele, annak semmi baja nem lesz, ellenben egy Raspberry Pi-vel. :)
