Microsoft Patents Sudo?!!

Lordy, lordy, lordy. They have no shame. It appears that Microsoft has just patented sudo, a personalized version of it.

Here it is, patent number7617530. Thanks, USPTO, for giving Microsoft, which is already a monopoly, a monopoly on something that's been in use since 1980 and wasn't invented by Microsoft. Here's Wikipedia's description of sudo, which you can meaningfully compare to Microsoft's description of its "invention".

Whitehouse.gov using Drupal

http://buytaert.net/whitehouse-gov-using-drupal
Big, exciting news! The flag ship website of the U.S. government, Whitehouse.gov, just relaunched on Drupal. This is a big day for Drupal, and for Open Source in government, and something all of us in the community should be very proud of.
...
Being one of the world's largest consumers of computer software, the U.S. government is not new to Drupal. Several agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, and the General Service Administration have been using Drupal, for example. Drupal adoption is growing rapidly within the U.S. government. However, Whitehouse.gov switching to Drupal goes above and beyond any other Drupal installation within the U.S. government, and is a fantastic testament for Drupal and Open Source. It will raise awareness about Drupal across the U.S. government, and across all governments world-wide.
Personally, I'm thrilled by the idea that Drupal can help governments provide greater transparency, higher velocity, and more flexibility.

Google large distributed systems

http://glinden.blogspot.com/2009/10/advice-from-google-on-large-distrib…
A standard Google server appears to have about 16G RAM and 2T of disk. If we assume Google has 500k servers (which seems like a low-end estimate given they used 25.5k machine years of computation in Sept 2009 just on MapReduce jobs), that means they can hold roughly 8 petabytes of data in memory and, after x3 replication, roughly 333 petabytes on disk. For comparison, a large web crawl with history, the Internet Archive, is about 2 petabytes and "the entire [written] works of humankind, from the beginning of recorded history, in all languages" has been estimated at 50 petabytes, so it looks like Google easily can hold an entire copy of the web in memory, all the world's written information on disk, and still have plenty of room for logs and other data sets. Certainly no shortage of storage at Google.

Raytheon deploying Android-powered RATS on battlefields in Afghanistan and Pakistan

http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/21/raytheon-deploying-android-powered-r…
Android, Android everywhere. Android, Android in my hair. In my Nook and in my car, in my netbook and in my... wait, Afghanistan? It seems defense contractor Raytheon, creators of the famous "pain ray", have launched a device called RATS: the Raytheon Android Tactical System. It allows soldiers to mark other soldiers and even UAVs as "buddies," then track their position in real time on a map, even picking up streaming video coming from above -- sort of like Latitude but putting a whole new spin on stalking. No word on how soldiers like their new devices so far, but once a Twitter app is added we're sure they won't shut up about it.

Washington Post Says Use Linux To Avoid Bank Fraud

Washington Post Security Fix columnist Brian Krebs recommends that banking customers consider using a Linux LiveCD, rather than Microsoft Windows, to access their on-line banking. He tells a story of two businesses that lost $100K and $447K, respectively, when thieves — armed with malware on the company controller's PC — were able to intercept one of the controller's log-in codes, and then delay the controller from logging in. Krebs notes that he is not alone in recommending the use of non-Windows machines for banking; The Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, an industry group supported by some of the world's largest banks, recently issued guidelines urging businesses to carry out all online banking activities from 'a stand-alone, hardened, and completely locked down computer system from where regular e-mail and Web browsing [are] not possible.' Krebs concludes his article with a link to an earlier column in which he steps readers through the process of booting a Linux LiveCD to do their on-line banking." Police in Australia offer similar advice, according to an item sent in by reader The Mad Hatterz: "Detective Inspector Bruce van der Graaf from the Computer Crime Investigation Unit told the hearing that he uses two rules to protect himself from cybercriminals when banking online. The first rule, he said, was to never click on hyperlinks to the banking site and the second was to avoid Microsoft Windows.

IBM - búcsú a Microsoft Office programjától

http://www.sg.hu/cikkek/69696/ibm_bucsu_a_microsoft_office_programjatol

Az IBM felszólította 360 000 dolgozóját, hogy haladéktalanul, mindössze 10 napon belül cseréljék le a Microsoft Office szoftvert a saját fejlesztésű Lotus Symphony-ra.
...

Petabytes on a budget: How to build cheap cloud storage

No One Sells Cheap Storage, so We Designed It

Before realizing that we had to solve this storage problem ourselves, we considered Amazon S3, Dell or Sun Servers, NetApp Filers, EMC SAN, etc. As we investigated these traditional off-the-shelf solutions, we became increasingly disillusioned by the expense. When you strip away the marketing terms and fancy logos from any storage solution, data ends up on a hard drive. But when we priced various off-the-shelf solutions, the cost was 10 times as much (or more) than the raw hard drives. Here’s a comparison chart of the price for one petabyte from various venders:

What’s Good For IBM...

No longer primarily a hardware maker, the company, still officially known as International Business Machines, ought to be renamed IBS—International Business Services. Over the past decade, and in the past two years in particular, IBM has become a global services company
...
IBM's world view has meant that hardware is an increasingly small portion of its revenue. It no longer makes personal computers, having sold its ThinkPad division to China's Lenovo; higher-end servers now constitute only a quarter of its business. The rest is in software and consulting

Yahoo committed seppuku today

The once proud warrior of the internet space laid down its sword, knelt at the feet of Microsoft and gutted itself today. There was no honor in this death, it was one brought by the shame of losing to Google and a lack of faith in one’s ability to compete in the space they created. To be clear, Yahoo didn’t need to do this deal, Microsoft did. Ultimately Yahoo will look back at this moment as the second–and perhaps fatal–mistake in their epic history.

http://index.hu/tech/net/2009/07/29/internetszimulator_keszul/
A kutatók azért döntöttek a nyílt forrású rendszer mellett, mert a projekt költségvetésébe nem fér bele egymillió Windows-licenc megvásárlása. A vírusok és a botnetek elsődleges táptalajának számító Windows-környezetet a Linuxon futó Wine emulátorral teremtik meg.

I love vista.

No, I don't use it, and I wouldn't want to. However, its hardware requirements are so ridiculously high, that hardware manufacturers these days have no option but to seriously bump the performance of their systems. As a result, they ship with ridiculous amounts of RAM and CPU power, while still keeping prices reasonable.

Of course performance still sucks your pants off if you indeed do use Vista, but not if you use an actual operating system.

I love vista.

Apollo 11 Source Code on GoogleCode

On this day 40 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon. This was quite an achievement for mankind and a key milestone in world history.

To commemorate this event the Command Module code (Comanche054) and Lunar Module code (Luminary099) have been transcribed from scanned images to run on yaAGC (an open source AGC emulator) by the Virtual AGC and AGS project.

London Stock Exchange to abandon failed Windows platform

Anyone who was ever fool enough to believe that Microsoft software was good enough to be used for a mission-critical operation had their face slapped this September when the LSE (London Stock Exchange)'s Windows-based TradElect system brought the market to a standstill for almost an entire day. While the LSE denied that the collapse was TradElect's fault, they also refused to explain what the problem really

FlickrFS for Linux

Manish Rai Jain developed an interesting tool for Linux based upone the FUSE kernel module that allows you to mount your Flickr account and manage you photos and tag.
“Flickrfs makes uploading to, downloading from, and organizing a Flickr account just like handling files in a mounted file system. After installing and setting up the link to your account, you can see all your photos separated into tag folders, edit and back up the pics and their metadata, and crop and resize photos on the fly, all reflected in realtime in your online account.”
