Nyílt forrású fejlesztői programot jelentett be a Palm

Néhány nappal ezelőtt Dion Almaer és Ben Galbraith - akik a Mozilla Developer Tools Lab-ot vezették annak a 2008-as elindulása óta - átigazoltak az Mozilla Corp.-tól a Palm-hoz. A két szakember a Palm-nál annak a Palm Developer Relations csapatnak lesznek igazgatói, amely a vállalat és a fejlesztők közti kapcsolattartásért felelős.

Alig ért át Almaer és Galbraith, a Palm máris bejelentette a webOS platformra fejleszteni kívánó, nyílt forrású fejlesztőknek szánt programját, amely teljes egészében az év végén indul el.

A fejlesztőknek zárt forrású alkalmazások esetén 99 dollár beugrót kell fizetniük a developer.palm.com-on. Ezután minden, a Palm App Catalogue-ban publikált alkalmazásuk után 50 dollárt.

A nyílt forrású alkalmazásokat fejlesztőknek - ha a forrást publikálják valamely gyakran alkalmazott nyílt forrású licenc alatt - nem kell kifizetniük a 99 dollárt és szabadon terjeszthetik az alkalmazásaikat a weben:

Open source apps. The web would never have happened without the open source movement. In this tradition, we will enable the distribution of open source webOS apps to the web without you having to pay the $99 program fee. If the source of your app is available to the public under one of the commonly accepted licenses (BSD, Apache, GPL, MIT, etc.), you can distribute your apps on the web for free. Open source projects will have a separate registration process and these open source accounts can only have open source projects associated with them. You will still have to register at webOSdev to download the Palm Mojo™ Software Development Kit; SDK downloads are free.
