My desktop OS: Frugalware

Tuesday April 18, 2006 (02:01 PM GMT)

By: Davide Rocco

I'm from Italy, and Italian men are well-known for appreciating beautiful women. Meanwhile, Hungarian women are well-known for being beautiful. Maybe it's no coincidence that my desktop OS is a beautiful Hungarian Linux distro: the brand new Frugalware 0.4.

I've always liked simple distros like Slackware and CRUX. They do just what you want them to do, no more, no less. But Slackware has its limits; the fact that it has no 2.6 kernel by default and provides a relatively small number of packages are the most important for me. CRUX, on the other hand, is really basic. It's great for learning Linux, but too time-consuming if you also have a social life. ArchLinux is closer to what I want, but not quite right.

Ezért a Mysql saját storage engine fejlesztésébe kezd. A fejlesztés alapja a Solid által a jővő héten (ápr. 24.) GPL licensz alatt kiadott SolidDB Storage Engine lesz.
A Solid Information Technology cég adatbázisszerverét eddig elsősorban telekomunikációs, és a pénzügyi cégek használták.

Linux kernel configurálás kezdőknek

To be honest, a lot of kernel features need other programs on a user-level, to do anything usefull, so this article is not only about the kernel, but also about the userspace software to turn that kernel features to anything usefull.
Another note: We shouldn't forget, drivers for Windows are usually supplied by the hardware-vendors. Out of the box, Windows doesn't support that much hardware.
In the Linux kernel however, all drivers are included "out of the box". This means, the drivers are tested for Linux, and found stable by the "Linux kernel" team. After that, they are added to the linux kernel, to be used by everybody.Innovation in Linux: An extraordinary Linux review

Az opensource szoftverek titkos előnyei.

Robin 'Roblimo' Miller cikke. Erdemes lenne a miniszteriumook (inf, gazd, pm) figyelmebe ajanlani:
Most conversations about the cost of free software deal with its effects on the software industry. Microsoft people often talk about how much money the proprietary software industry can add to a developing country's economy. At the same time, proprietary software vendors tell us the total cost of ownership (TCO) for their products is often less than cost of running competing open source products, even though in developing countries the cost of labor is almost always low enough that license fees for proprietary software are huge by comparison. All these conflicting numbers get wearisome. Perhaps we need to look beyond the software industry -- and beyond software pricing -- to see what effects free and open source software have on a country's economy. The hidden benefits of free software

Summer of Code 2006

The Summer of Code is officially on again this year. As of today, we're taking in applications from mentoring organizations, so watch that list of mentoring organizations grow! Then, starting May 1st, we'll start taking student applications.
We've prepared two FAQs, one for Mentors and one for Students. We've also have created an IRC channel and Google Group for you. The website for the Summer of Code can be found at http://code.google.com/soc/.slashdot:Summer of Code 2006

Miért sokkal kevésbé bizonságos a Windows, mint a Linux

Why Windows is less secure than Linux by ZDNet's Richard Stiennon -- Windows is inherently harder to secure than Linux. There I said it. The simple truth. Many millions of words have been written and said on this topic. I have a couple of pictures. The basic argument goes like this. In its long evolution, Windows has grown so complicated [...]

európai tőzsde Solarisról Linuxra (HP,Intel) migrált

Euronext.liffe is moving off the SunFire 15K, a large mainframe box, that runs the Solaris OS and chosen Hewlett Packard (HP) to supply the high-end compute intensive servers and Red Hat, the distributor of Linux. In addition, it has secured full support agreements with both HP and Red Hat.

"In a nutshell, performance, cost and scalability were the three most important factors, says Johanek. "The technology is 30 times less expensive for the same amount of performance," he says. "We're getting 30 times more bang for our buck in moving over to Linux," adds Johanek.Euronext.liffe Shifts Exchange to Linux-Intel Platform

OpenSourceParking . com

Bruce Perens ujabb kezdeményezése:
Recently, the domain name registrar GoDaddy, used by many domain resellers, switched its domain parking host from Apache to a Microsoft server. GoDaddy has 4.5 Million parked domains, and this resulted in a 5% market-share shift from Apache to Microsoft IIS in the Netcraft report. Parked sites don't have content, so this is only an "appearance" change. It's said that Microsoft offers the largest domain registrars a lot of money to do this. And of course figures influence managers, whether they are real or not.
It's time for the Open Source / Free Software community to fight back. I've implemented the means. discuss, OpenSourceParking.com

Making the Switch from Microsoft to FREE!

I have read lots of posts and stories all over the net about there not being SOFTWARE of comparable features and power for Linux. Many people are under this illusion and therefore choose to stay with Microsoft and pay out their asses to boot. Well I for one am tired of paying for software and operating systems. So I decided I would take some time and find very good software/operating systems to replace the crap I currently have had to pay for. Below you will find a list of Very good Operating Systems and a nice sized list of FREE (except when noted) software. I have tried to include everything that would be needed on most Desktops and Workstations and even included accounting and tax software as those seem to be two of the biggest problems. I didn't include any games, but rest assured there are thousands of very good games out there for Linux. Including Doom, SimCity, Civilization, Qauke and many more.

Can Linux help Oracle beat IBM?

Oracle is duking it out with IBM for database market share, but Linux put Oracle over the top this year.
For years, Oracle and IBM have fought over bragging rights for the $8 billion database software market - a key technological battleground upon which sales of almost all other business software depend.
Now Oracle seems poised to gain an edge in that battle, thanks to years of work pent adapting its software for Linux. Windows to Ubuntu Transition Guide

A Comprehesive Guide

Alright, so you have successfully installed Ubuntu Linux, but now what do you do with it? You are in the right place. I am going to get you started with a guide on how to use your new Ubuntu system. This transition guide is targeted at existing Windows users and will show you how to do program installations, a little system configuration, but primarily highlight some Windows "replacement" programs for common applications you can't live without. This guide's intent is to introduce you to equivalent programs to what you are accustomed to and, hopefully, to cover a good amount of what you might want in a new install. I am basing the content on what I have personally experienced, email feedback from my installation article, questions from the PC Mech Forums, and common topics from the Ubuntu Forums. Hopefully this will answer a lot of questions you may have before you ever have them.

Jelenleg az élen a JAVA áll 21.3%-al, őt követi a C (17.7%), C++(10.90%), PHP(10.88%), Basic(10.1%), Perl(5.8%), és a C#(3.9%).
A leggyorsabb növekedést jelenleg a JAVA mutatja, nagy visszaesők a Perl,Delpi,COBOL.

Miért fejlődik ilyen gyorsan az opensource?

A SmartBIZ magazin közölt egy üzleti elemzést, hogy miért fejlõdik ilyen gyorsan az opensorce. A cikk írója Curt Finch, a Journyx.com CEO-ja.
-megkapod a forráskódot
-a belemodósítás engedélyezett
