A google csatlakozott az Open Invention Network-hoz

In turn, we feel a strong responsibility to the Linux community, and we’re always looking for creative ways to put our resources in the hands of Linux developers. That’s why today we became a licensee of the Open Invention Network (OIN), an innovative patent-sharing organization founded to create a legally protected environment for anyone who works with Linux.

Airborne Linux Hackers Unite!

Virgin America calls their new in-flight entertainment system “Red,” but it is really a gigantic sociological experiment in airborne distributed computing.

First consider the idea of a plane full of networked, Linux-based computers. (There will be one in each of the seat backs of the A319 and A320 jets that are to inaugurate service between San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., this week.)

IBM Saves $250M Running Linux On Mainframes

oday IBM will announce it is consolidating nearly 4,000 small computer servers in six locations onto about 30 refrigerator-sized mainframes running Linux, saving $250 million in the process. The 4,000 replaced servers will be recycled by IBM Global Asset Recovery Services. The six data centers currently take up over 8 million square feet, or the size of nearly 140 football fields.

Open Addict blocks Internet Explorer users

The popular open source advocacy website Open Addict, is now blocking Internet Explorer users from viewing the newly designed front page due to IE rendering bugs: "I'm tired of hacking workarounds for IE's bad implementations of standard technologies; Try to validate Internet Explorer's home page and see if you think Microsoft cares about standards

Hyper-fast coprocessor plugs into Opteron socket

This is not a hoax. A Silicon Valley company has started shipping an FPGA-based coprocessor designed to plug right into an open "socket 940" location on a standard multiprocessor AMD Opteron motherboard running Linux.
[...]
The unit connects an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) directly to the main system HyperTransport processor bus, for claimed processor bandwidth of 3.2Gbps -- a big jump compared to PCI, Ethernet, and other common co-processor system interfaces, not to mention a big drop in latency.
[...]
Depending on the application, FPGAs can execute routines 10-20 times faster than software running on a general-purpose processor.
[...]
The RPU110 is shipping in quantity now, priced at $19,000 in quantities of 1-4, according to the company. It is supplied with Linux drivers.

Intel joins One Laptop Per Child initiative

The OLPC got a major boost today with the announcement that Intel has joined the organization and will serve on its board of directors. No doubt, Intel wouldn't mind seeing the OLPC's low-cost Linux laptop's AMD Geode processor replaced by one of its own chips.

More specifically, Intel said it expects to "explore collaborations involving technology and educational content."[...]

Web 2.0 is built on Open Source

Amazon uses Linux. eBay uses Windows. But what OSs and webservers run Web 2.0? We tested 17 of our favorites and found out. The script is included below to check for yourself.
http://www.venturecake.com/web-20-is-built-on-open-source/
Linux is pretty much it for Web 2.0 startups. Which Linux? Digg tell us they run Debian, it seems MobiTV run Red Hat, but we’re not sure about the rest. Comment below if you know.

For the web server, Apache’s still massive but surprisingly LigHTTPd is as popular amongst Web 2.0 startups as it is hard to spell. If you’re wondering, Mongrel is a web server built for Ruby.

OOXML Formulas Could Be Dangerous

According to Rob Weir's blog, Microsoft's 325-page OOXML specification for spreadsheet formulas is deeply flawed. From basic trigonometric functions that forget to specify units, to statistical functions, to critical financial functions — the specification does not contain correct formulas that could possibly be implemented in an interoperable way. Quoting Mr. Weir: 'It has incorrect formulas that, if implemented according to the standard, may cause loss of life, property, and capital... Shame on all those who praised and continue to praise the OOXML formula specification without actually reading it.
