Linux Kernel Developers Summit 2005

Ma ér véget a két napig tartó, 2005 évi Linux Kernel Fejlesztői Találkozó Kanadában, az Ontario állambeli Ottawa városában. A rendezőség vezetője - mint minden éven - Theodore Ts'o. A segítői: Andrea Arcangeli, James Bottomley, Jonathon Corbet, Steve Hemminger, Gerrit Huizenga, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Matthew Mackall, Andrew Morton, Rik van Riel.

A fejlesztők minden éven az LKDS alkalmával jelölik ki a Linux kernel fejlesztésének aktuális irányát. Számos ötlet, nagyobb bejelentés szokott ez idő tájt napvilágot látni. Linux kernel teljesítmény-elemző projekt

Linus korábban azt mondta, hogy szívesen látna rendszeres benchmark eredményeket az egyes Linux kernel kiadásokról.

Kenneth Chen és az Intel Open Source Technology Center létrehozott egy Linux kernel teljesítmény-elemző projektet. A projekt számos mérőprogramot futtat az egyes Linux kernel kiadásokon, különböző gépeken, architektúrákon. A mérések kiértékelésekor a baseline (viszonyítási szint) a 2.6.9-es Linux kernel.

A projekt célja, hogy rendszeresen futtasson benchmarkokat, próbára téve a Linux kernel különböző alrendeszereit (virtuális memória kezelés, I/O alrendszer, processz ütemező, filerendszer, hálózat, stb.

Jelenleg 13 benchmark program eredményei tekinthetők meg táblázatos és grafikus formában. Az eredményeket kiértékelve talán könnyebb eldönteni, hogy mennyit javult vagy romlott az egyes kernel kiadások teljesítménye. A tesztek egészen a legfrissebb kernelekig bezárólag készülnek. Jelenleg a legutolsó mért kernel a 2.6.13-rc1-es.

Interbench: interaktivitás benchmark

Con Kolivas - ütemező finomhangoló és desktop élményt javító kernelpatch szerző, nem mellesleg anesztéziára specializálódott orvos - egy olyan mérőprogrammal állt elő, amellyel a desktop Linux operációs rendszerünk interaktivitását mérhetjük.Az rendszer interaktivitását mérő program neve Interbench. Nem ez az első próbálkozás a doktortól mérőprogram elkészítésére. Korábban az LKML-en számtalan mérést végeztek a Contest-tel, amely a kernel válaszadási képességet mérte.

Linux Kernel IA32 Compatibility ``execve()'' Buffer Overflow Issue

Az IA64 és AMD64 architektúrákon futó Linux kernelek egyes verzióiban olyan hibát találtak, amely elsősorban a 2.4-es, de a régebbi 2.6-os kernelt használókat is érinti. Egy a kernelben levő puffer túlcsordulási hibát kihasználva a rosszindulatú helyi felhasználó kihasználva magasabb privilégium-szinthez juthat vagy DoS-olhatja a rendszert.

Az alapértelmezett Hz érték megváltoztatása

Az LKML-en újra előjött a kernel alapértelemezett timer frekvenciájának kérdése.

A 2.4-es Linux kernelben az alapértelemezett timer interrupt frekvencia 100 Hz (x86). A 2.5-ös kernel fejlesztésének idején Linus ezt 1000 Hz-re változtatta, és ez is maradt a default a 2.6-ban is.

A timer interrupt a rendszer lelke. Minden ennek függvényében jön létre vagy szűnik meg a kernelben. Ez a periódus a rendszer ``finomságának'' mértékegysége. A timerek 1/1000 másodpercenként bukkannak fel, az időszeletek (timeslices) 1/1000 másodpercenként válnak esedékessé, stb.

A magasabb frekvenciának pozitív és negatív oldalai is vannak. Kedvez a multimédia alkalmazásoknak, hiszen jobb lesz a rendszer válaszadási képessége, viszont a megnövekedett timer overhead a régebbi gépeken lassuláshoz vezet. Szintén nem kedvez a magas Hz érték a laptopok akkumulátoron töltött idejének (egyes mérések szerint akár felére is csökkenthet az elemidő) és a szerverek is jobban érzik magukat, ha ez az érték alacsonyabb.Andrew Morton korábban a 2.6.13 várható újdonságai között említette a Kconfig-on keresztül változtatható alapértelemezett Hz értéket. Az elképzelés szerint az alapértelmezett Hz érték a jövőben 250 lenne, de a kernel fordítása előtt lehetne választani 100 és 1000-es értéket is.

Alan Cox szerint ezzel a probléma még nincs teljesen megoldva, mert szerinte a 100 Hz jó a power management-hez és a régebbi gépeknek, a 250 Hz túl gyors néhány laptopnak és az energia gazdálkodáshoz, viszont túl lassú néhány multimédia felhasználónak.

Nem ez az első eset, hogy a fejlesztők megpróbálják megtalálni a megfelelő Hz értéket. Tavaly év végén Andrea Arcangeli készített egy patchet, amellyel boot időben lehetett változtatni a Hz értékét. 2003-ban szintén volt erre próbálkozás.

ORT - Oops Reporting Tool

Az oops nem más, mint egy Linux kernel bug jelentés. Akkor generálódik, ha a kernel működésében valami rendelleneség adódik. Például ha a kernel megpróbál nem valós memóriaterülethez hozzáférni. Az oops nem feltétlenül jelent programozási hibát - hibás hardver is generálhat ilyen jelentést.

Az oops üzenet hasznos lehet a Linux kernel fejlesztőinek a hibák feltárásában és elhárításában. Igazán akkor hasznos, ha a bejelentők azt megfelelő módon juttatják el a fejlesztői listára és mellékelnek minden egyéb adatot arról a rendszerről, amelyen a probléma jelentkezett.Általában a bugreportokból ki szokott maradni itt-ott valami lényeges. Ilyenkor a fejlesztők arra kérik a bejelentőt, hogy adjon további infókat a rendszeréről és a futtatási környezetről. Sok esetben a bug jelentője a fejlesztő levelére már nem válaszol, így a hiba adatok hiányában csak nehezebben orvosolható.

Michał Piotrowski úgy gondolta, hogy hasznos lenne, ha a bugot bejelentők egy egységes formátumú levelet küldenének az LKML-re. Ez segítené a fejlesztők munkáját, mert a bugreportban a fontos adatok mindig megtaláhatók lennének, nem kellene sokáig bogarászni az értékes infót a felesleges sorok között. Michał ezért úgy döntött, hogy elkészíti az ORT-ot.

Az ORT egy shell szkript, amelynek paraméterként meg lehet adni a fileban elmentett oops üzenetet. A szkript számos kérdés feltétele után összeállít egy rendezett levelet, amelyet elküldhet a bugot jelentő az LKML-re.

A futtatáskor az ORT első kérdése, hogy milyen editort (1 - vim 2 - emacs 3 - mcedit 4 - vi 5 - elvis 6 - joe 7 - jove 8 - nano 9 - pico o - other) használunk. Miután megadtuk, megkérdezi, hogy mi a kedvenc pager programounk (1 - less
2 - more 3 - most o - other), a kedvenc email kliensünk (1 - mutt 2 - pine 3 - nail 4 - sendmail o - other) és azt, hogy hosszú vagy rövid bugreportot szándékozunk-e készíteni (egyes fejlesztők jobban szeretik a rövidebb bugreportokat).

Ha a kérdésekre válaszoltunk, akkor megadhatjuk a probléma rövid leírását, majd a hosszabb verziót, azt, hogy a probléma melyik kernel területet érinti, majd opcionálisan egy rövid shell szkripetet is csatolhatunk, amellyel a hibát elő lehet idézni.

Ha készen vagyunk, akkor a szkript opcionálisan begyűjti a futtató környezet infóit, a PCI infókat, USB infókat, a /proc és /sys filerendszerek másolatát, a .config file-t, és egyéb fontos paramétereket. A végén megnézhetjük az elkészített riportot, majd ha meg vagyunk elégedve vele, akkor el is küldhetjük.
