[megoldva] Linux (Debian) bootolása PReP (PowerPC) vason

Egy Debian 5.05 PowerPC netinst CD-t szeretnék bootolni egy IBM RS/6000-en (7040-140). Ez még egy PReP-es (PowerPC Reference Platform) gép.

A Debian weboldala szerint támogatja az architektúrát, bár - őszintén szólva - nem tudom, hogy ez mennyire naprakész információ.

Utánanéztem a dolognak, majd a leírtaknak megfelelően át is váltottam soros kommunikációra, bejött a firmware prompt is, megtettem a kért változtatásokat, és beírtam: 

boot cdrom

Majd rövidesen visszakaptam a firmware promptot.
A gépben két cd meghajtó van. Még korábban grafikus módban beállítottam, hogy csak a CD meghajtókról bootoljon automatikusan, így a 

printenv

kimenetéből megvolt a két CD meghajtó device path-je, így megpróbálkoztam azokat a 

boot

parancs után írni, de hiába, az eredmény ugyanaz maradt.

A leírás szerint egy soros bootloadernek kellene betöltődnie, viszont ehhez kellene az eszköz után egy megfelelően cizellált sztring ami nem tudom, hogy mi kellene legyen.
Persze az is lehet hogy a fentebbi oldalon leírtak már régesrég nem aktuálisak.
Ez esetben megpróbálom a Debian által ajánlott 

boot cd:,\install\yaboot

parancsot.
Ezzel kapcsolatban csak annyi fenntartásom van, hogy nem tudom, hogy a yaboot támogatja-e a PReP-es gépeket. (A leírások szerint igen.)

Van valakinek tapasztalata az ilyesmivel?

Na erre én is kiváncsi vagyok. Nekem egy kollégám próbálkozott vele "pet projekt" jelleggel, neki sem jött össze. Bár az ha jól nézem egy CHRP-s gép volt.

Végignyálaztam a debian-powerpc levlistát, de cd-bootolásra vonatkozó infót nem találtam.
Mindegy, most felteszem én eme kérdést...

Gyors megoldás?

Rakjál fel "woody"-t ( annak a telepítője még "normálisan" kezeli ezt a különben "múzeumszökevény" típust ) majd addig "upgrade"-lj míg naprakész állapotra hozod...

Szerintem gyorsabb mint "telepítőt hegeszteni" hozzá...

Telepítő floppy-t az archive.debian.org-on találsz,
ha nincs floppy-d vagy nem működik akkor "Network Based Install"

Kiegészítés:

a firmware upgrade szükséges...

A firmware-em TIG99292-es, ez elvileg jó. Persze azért majd megpróbálom upgrade-elni.

Szerk: Végül sikerült frissíteni a firmware-t, de floppyról nem ment, végül parancssorból sikerült.
Bár nem a leírás szerinti 

/usr/lpp/diagnostics/bin/update_flash_rspc -q -f <path>/tig04204.img

parancsot használtam, hanem a diag parancs ui-jából választottam ki a megfelelő menüpontot. Ettől függetlenül persze szépen frissült a firmware.

A 4.0_rX-es Debian vonal iso-i még bootolhatók PReP-es gépen.
A CD gyökerében, a .disk mappában van az mkisofs fájl, amiben szerepel a parancs, amivel az iso-t létrehozták.
Ebből sikerült kihámozni, hogy a loadert a 

boot cdrom:,\install\prep\vmlinuz-prep.initrd

paranccsal lehet bootolni, ott kell megadni a kernelparamétereket, mert a firmware prompta beírva nem kapja meg a kernel azokat.

Eddig jutottam. Innentől kezdve se kép, se hang.

a megfelelő parancs, bár nekem ezzel sajnos nem jutott el a bootloaderig, de látszott hogy próbálkozik...

Az itt levő floppy imagekkel végigpróbálkoztam, de egyik sem tudott felállni használható szintre, csak a SuSE és Mandrake-es imagekkel sikerült eljutni idáig (bár ez sem sok...), aztán megakadtak...

Végül egy reggeli pirítós után bebootoltam rajta a NetBSD PReP portját, ami minden zokszó nélkül, vígan bebootolt!

Néhány napos intenzív levelezés után a debian-powerpc levlistán, és némi alkatrész csere-bere után a probléma megoldódott.

Röviden összefoglalva:
- Debian 5.0.x: nem támogatja a PReP architektúrát
- Debian 4.0rX: elvileg támogatja, de a SCSI vezérlő drivere bugos, így nem bootol be
- Debian 3.1rX: nem sikerült bebootolni
- openSuSE 10.0 PPC build-je rendben bebootol, "szépen" megy
- AIX 5.1 és NetBSD/prep 5.0.2 rendben bootol
- A maximális RAM mennyiség (768 MB) mellett egyáltalán nem bootol (az initramfs ellenőrzésénél úgy marad), de két modult eltávolítva (512 MB marad) már rendben bootolnak
- a memóriamodulok valószínűleg rendben vannak, mert az AIX és a NetBSD is rendesen bootolt maximális memóriamennyiség mellett.
- a Linux kernelben a PPC 32 és 64 bites ágainak merge-ölésekor dobták a PReP architektúra támogatását, úgyhogy a jövőben nem várható friss linuxok megjelenése erre az architektúrára.

A listán ajánlották az openSuSE 10 PPC buildjét, ami végül is a nyertes lett.
Ez már egy elég régi verzió, így relatíve nehéz megtalálni. Itt van pár link:

Ahogy nézem, a memória mennyiségével lehetett gond.
512, és 640 MB-tal vígan bootolt, ellenben, ha a maximális 768 MB volt beletéve, a Linuxok nem tudtak bootolni, persze ez a NetBSD-t és az AIX-ot nem zavarta egyátalán.

I have also tried to boot from floppies, but it didn't work either.
I was trying to boot the Yellow Dog Linux floppy images, that are
downloadable from:
http://users.linpro.no/ingvar/43p/images

It managed to boot up to a certain point, where it was caught in loop, while trying to reset the Symbios integrated SCSI controller.
