Bezárnak a Symbian Foundation weboldalai

A bejelentés itt olvasható.

Akkor most ez a temetés végét jeleni?

Bemásolom most már a bejelentés teljes szövegét. Valamilyen hálózati anomália miatt sok olvasó nyilván nem tudja megnyitni a már többször belinkelt hírforrásokat. (És úgyis bezárják a blog.symbian.org oldalt. Így megmarad legalább itt):

Euromillions for the Symbian ecosystem: €22M committed to next generation technologies for Symbian
Nov 1st by RichardC

A consortium of major technology and research organisations has come together to propose development projects that will enhance the Symbian platform for the benefit of the entire Symbian ecosystem.

Under an initiative sponsored by the European Commission (EC), the Symbian platform was this week endorsed by the Artemis Joint Technology Initiative and specifically identified as a unique technology that is a vital focus for European-centric mobile software development.

As a result, the EC has granted €11 million towards the funding of the development projects proposed by the consortium. With matched funding (i.e. funding provided by companies in the consortium), this means a total of €22 million is being invested in the development of next generation technologies for the Symbian platform.

The consortium is made up of 24 organisations from 8 European countries, comprising major mobile device manufacturers, hardware and service integration professional services, major consumer electronics companies, mobile network operators, application developers, universities and research institutions.

The consortium is called SYMBEOSE, meaning “Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe”. The precise aim of the SYMBEOSE consortium is to instigate a series of state-of-the-art development projects that will create new opportunities for Symbian’s global stakeholders.

So what are these new opportunities and how is this news anticipated to benefit the Symbian community?

Broadly speaking, the proposed advances to the Symbian platform will focus on radically improving the basis for new device creation on Symbian. Additional work will concentrate on a set of core platform enablers that will support the types of mobile services that will be most prevalent in the near future.

For example, the SYMBEOSE initiative will develop new core platform capabilities, providing the best possible levels of power efficiency and improving Symbian’s current, market-leading offering in this area. This will be achieved by delivering fresh optimizations which harness the rapidly developing area of multi-core processing used in conjunction with new techniques in Asymmetrical Multiprocessing.

Another good example relates to new concepts in “cloud-computing”. Although this is already having a huge impact on the way in which personal content is being consumed and managed, the technical basis of how cloud computing should be supported for future mobile devices is still poorly defined. Core system capabilities within mobile platforms in general need to be better understood in terms of improving platform efficiency and the performance of cloud-based services. Gaining this understanding and using it to enhance the Symbian platform is one of the fundamental objectives of the SYMBEOSE project.

A further key development area to be addressed relates to future mobile platforms and embedded devices. New opportunities will arise from the principle that all mobile, Internet-connected devices share a number of common requirements on their underlying software system. The Symbian platform is in a strong position to benefit in this emerging world of embedded devices by supporting new types of hardware.

We and the consortium are very excited by this opportunity to spearhead next generation technologies on Symbian and we’re thrilled that the companies in the SYMBEOSE consortium and the EC have decided to invest in the future of the Symbian platform and its global ecosystem.

The overall aim of the SYMBEOSE project is to foster collaboration across the industry: conducting the work in an open manner will allow the wider Symbian community to take a special interest in the consortium’s work, monitor its progress and contribute to the work to support their own plans for service development.
