NetBSD

A régóta remélt nathanw_sa branch beolvasztására utaló terveket jelentett be a NetBSD csapat. A nathanw_sa branch implementálja a NetBSD-current-be az ütemező aktivációkat (scheduler activations) és tartalmaz egy natív támogatást a pthreads-hez (pthreads = posix threads). A munka legnagyobb részét ezen a projecten Nathan Williams végezte.

I think we are basically at the point where the nathanw_sa branch can be merged down to the mainline. I would like to do that on Friday (US/Pacific time). Here is what I'm planning to do:

1. Make an announcement that the merge is beginning. I would really appreciate it if people refrained from checking code into the kernel while this happens.

2. Merge the kernel portion branch onto the trunk, compile and boot kernels for platforms I can test directly:

* alpha

* arm

* i386

* sparc

* sparc64

* powerpc

* m68k (if I'm feeling ambitious)

* mips (if I'm feeling really ambitious)

3. Commit kernel portion of merge, and bump the kernel verison.

4. Merge the userland part of the branch.

5. Build userland for platforms I can test easily:

* alpha

* arm

* sparc64

* powerpc

* m68k

(common thread here -- diskless systems :-)

6. Commit userland portion of merge, and ensure all the requisite library version bumps have been performed.

7. Announce merge is complete, and that tree is once again open.

8. File critical/high bug reports against platforms which are

known to not have the necessary modifications to even compile:

Kernel / libc:

* sh5/evbsh5

* hppa/hp700

* pc532

* x86_64

libpthread / libpthread_dbg:

* sh3

* vax

* sh5

* hppa

* ns32k

* x86_64

Note that sh3 and vax will be the only platforms which will

fail in the autobuild. sh5, hppa, ns32k, and x86_64 are not

currently built by the autobuild.

YES, THIS MEANS THAT PLATFORMS WHICH ARE MISSING LIBPTHREAD SUPPORT WILL FAIL TO BUILD. We hope this is an effective motivational tool.

9. File serious/high bug reports against platforms which do not

have gdb thread support in their "NetBSD native" support files:

* alpha

* arm

* m68k

* mips

* sparc

* sparc64

* sh3

* sh5

* hppa

* ns32k

* vax

* x86_64

I think these problems will be easy to fix up, but I want an

audit-trail anyhow.

10. Announce to the world, and beg people to TEST TEST TEST :-)

The merging of this branch represents the light at the end of a long tunnel, quite a lot of work, almost all of it by Nathan Williams -- I think we all owe him a big round of applause (and a few rounds of beers at the next Usenix

probably wouldn't hurt :-)

NetBSD: Mach és Darwin bináris kompatibilitás

Nagyrészt Paul Kranenburg erőfeszítéseinek köszönhetően a NetBSD -current mostantól támogatja az SMP-t (Symmetric Multi Processors) a sparc platformon. Emmanuel Dreyfus legújabb projektje az, hogy megvalósítsa a NetBSD OS-en való Mach és Darwin binárisokkal való kompatibilitást. Azaz azt szeretné elérni, hogy a NetBSD tudja futtatni a fent említett operációs rendszerek binárisait.

"A WindowServer tud kommunikálni a mach_init-tel és fut elég hosszú ideig, amíg össze nem omlik. A következő lépés az, hogy fixáljuk az emulációs bugokat amelyek a WindowServer összeomlását idézik elő, majd reimplementálhatjuk a Darwin IOKit-jét, hogy a WindowServer muasson is valamit." (A WindowServer a MacOS X X szervere.)A project honlapja szerint, "Ha lesz egy teljesen működő Darwin bináris kompatibilitásunk a NetBSD/powerpc platformon (ha ez eljön egy nap), akkor csak fognunk kell a MacOS X könyvtárakat, és futtatni tudunk bármilyen MacOS X programot, hasonlóan ahhoz, ahogy most a NetBSD futtatni tudja a Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, stb binárisokat.

A kérdés már csak az, hogy az emuláció mennyire lassítja le a programok futását.

Alistair Crooks jelentette, hogy 2002. november végére 3327 csomag található a NetBSD Csomag Gyűjteményben (Packages Collection), az elmúlt havi (október) 3269 csomaggal szemben, tehát 58 csomaggal gyarapodott a kollekció. Folytatódik Emmanuel Dreyfus [p99dreyf@criens.u-psud.fr] folyamatban levő cikksorozata, amely a NetBSD operációs rendszeren való Irix bináris kompatibilitást elemzi. A cikksorozat ötödik részében az Irix Multithreading emulációról esik szó.

A cikksorozat az Onlamp-on jelenik meg, a minőségre garancia az O'Reilly név.Emmanuel Dreyfus rendszer és hálózati adminisztrátor Párizsban, Franciaországban és jelenleg aktív NetBSD fejlesztő. Unix felhasználó 1996 óta, az első általa telepített Unix rendszer egy Mac68k-n futó NetBSD volt 1998-ban. Dreyfus 2001. januárjában lett NetBSD fejlesztő, a munkája a projectben az, hogy integrálja a Linux emulációs kódot a NetBSD PowerPC verziójába.

A useful package if you're fed up, like Jason, of carrying two Microvax 3800s around with you, since he now has two NetBSD/vax installations on his laptop, as simh-vax supports Ethernet.

It strikes me that we should be working out the simulation size ratios (i.e. size of simulated host to real host), and as I now have simh running on my Jornada, I'm feeling confident. Now for hermes...

A TeamASA és a NetBSD portjairól híres Wasabi Systems összefogott, hogy kiadjanak egy új "Személyi Internet Hálózatra Kapcsolt Storage/Server"-t amely 733MHz XScale CPU, LVD SCSI és Gbit Ethernet részekből épül fel. A rendszer megközelíthető AppleTalk, Samba és a még érdekesebb iSCSI-n (iSCSI: SCSI over IP segítségével a szerverek képesek lesznek nagy távolságokból is elérni a háttértárakat, így növelhetõ a megbízhatóság és a katasztrófahelyzetek kezelésének hatékonysága.) keresztül. Ja és természetesen NetBSD-t futtat a stuff.! A berendezés specifikációit és képét megtalálod a honlapon.

Ha a 2002/08/26-nál frissebb NetBSD -current -et használsz, akkor frissítened kell a kernelforrásodat (és a kernelt) ASAP.

2002. szeptembere végén 3214 csomag volt található a NetBSD Csomag Gyűjteményben, ez a szám 110-zel több mint az azt megelőző hónapban volt. Akkor 3104 csomagot találhattunk a port kollekcióban.

The Package of the Month award is a three-way tie:

1. to pkgsrc/net/hping, nominated by Andrew Brown. hping was inspired by the ping(8) command, but as well as ICMP, it supports TCP, UDP, ICMP and RAW-IP protocols, has a traceroute mode, the ability to send files using a covert channel, and many other features.

2. pkgsrc/audio/mserv_irman, nominated by the hastily-recovered David Brownlee. mserv_irman is only of use to people with an irman from evation.com and a desire to have many people listen to the same mp3 jukebox without bloodshed :)

3. pkgsrc/emulators/generator, nominated by Alexander Crooks (relation). For those moments when the S Club 7 CD just won't suffice...
