I am writing to you because I have grave concerns about the copyright law update you will vote on shortly. The proposal was written with good intentions, but unfortunately disregards the complexities of copyright and will lead to severe economic consequences for many constituents.
Here are a few examples why the proposed measures won't work and will cause economic harm:
- How the Link Tax has damaged Spains publishing industry: https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-google-news-effect-spain-reveals-the-…
- Uploading static noise (not copyrightable) causes 5 copyright claims on YouTube: https://www.eff.org/takedowns/ten-hours-static-gets-five-copyright-noti…
- Universal Media Group abusing the DMCA to censor critical voices: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2011/12/umg-we-have-the-right-to-bl…
- Video of US president Obama removed due to copyright claim by BMG for singing one line of a copyrighted song: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20120717/13500819733/bmg-doubles-down…
- When filters fail: These cases show we can’t trust algorithms to clean up the internet: https://juliareda.eu/2017/09/when-filters-fail/I ask you consider these facts and vote against the proposal being tabled to you.
Best regards,
