A FreeBSD 9.1-RC2 után rá épülő PC-BSD verzió is megjelent. Joshua Smith bejelentette a PC-BSD 9.1-RC2 image-ek elérhetőségét i386 és amd64 rendszerek számára. A végleges kiadás újdonságai közül néhány:

  • FreeBSD 9.1 alap
  • KDE 4.8.4
  • New system installer! Greatly simplified for desktop and server installs.
  • New "PC-BSD Server" installation option. Includes command-line utilities like pbi-manager, warden, metapkgmanager and more.
  • Support for ZFS mirror / raidz(1,2,3) during installation.
  • Support for SWAP on ZFS, allowing entire disk ZFS installation.
  • Support for setting additional ZFS data-set options, such as compression, noexec, etc.
  • Warden jail management integrated into system. Allows creating jails via GUI, adding packages and other administration.
  • Support for Warden to create Linux Jails
  • New "Sound Configuration GUI"
  • New "Hardware compatibility" GUI
  • First boot setup wizard allows OEM installs to be easily performed.

Nagyon nem vagyok bsd-s, laikus kérdéseim vannak. Szerverként használja valaki?

Miért választaná bárki is a desktop orientált PC-BSD-t szervernek, amikor ez nem más, mint egy FreeBSD, amit megpróbálnak desktop felhasználásra emészthetővé tenni? Ha nem desktop-ra akarod használni, akkor maradj inkább a FreeBSD-nél. Ha problémád van, biztos, hogy jobban jársz, ha FreeBSD-ről jelented a hibát, mintha PC-BSD-ről. Még akkor is, ha az utóbbi mögött van valami cég.

FreeBSD Server: installs a basic, vanilla installation of FreeBSD. While the installation routine is different, the end result is the same as if one had installed FreeBSD from a FreeBSD media as it results in a minimal, command-line only FreeBSD server installation.

TrueOS™: adds the following features to a vanilla installation of FreeBSD: the PBI Manager command-line suite of utilities which can be used to manage PBIs and create one's own software repositories. It also adds the following command-line utilities to /usr/local/bin: pc-metapkgmanager, pc-netupdate, and Warden®.
